Upstate NY Cabin

This project was never meant to be another neutral “upstate escape.” The bones already had a point of view: a low-slung mid-century cabin, a generous lawn, stonework, warm wood, and the kind of slightly odd domestic details that are much more interesting than starting from scratch. The goal was to lean into that character rather than flatten it.

Inside, we kept the palette warm, earthy, and a little nostalgic. The living room is anchored by the original stone fireplace, wood ceiling, parquet floors, and a mix of vintage silhouettes that feel collected rather than decorated. Soft greens, rusts, checks, plaids, and worn-in woods keep the space relaxed, while the furniture layout makes the room feel easy to settle into after a hike, a long dinner, or several hours of doing absolutely nothing.

The kitchen and dining areas became the place to let the house get a little more playful. Green tile, warm wood cabinetry, chrome hardware, a checkerboard floor, a round dining table, and a large paper lantern give the rooms a familiar, almost grandparents’-house quality, but with cleaner lines and a more intentional rhythm. Nothing feels overly polished, which is the point. It feels like a house with a memory.

Throughout the bedrooms and hallways, we kept the approach simple: good light, soft textiles, vintage art, graphic rugs, and enough negative space to let the house breathe. The bathrooms carry the same language forward with green tile, brown floors, simple fixtures, and small moments of color and art that make them feel connected to the rest of the cabin.
