Middle Child Clubhouse

When Middle Child expanded from its original sandwich shop into Middle Child Clubhouse, the goal wasn’t to simply make a bigger version of what already existed. The original shop had its own scrappy, beloved energy; this new space needed to hold onto that charm while becoming something more expansive: an all-day restaurant, bar, coffee counter, sandwich shop, and neighborhood hangout under one roof.

The design pulls from familiar Philadelphia references without recreating any one of them too literally. There are hints of diners, delis, rec rooms, corner bars, and old neighborhood lunch spots, but the space is cleaner, brighter, and more open than pure nostalgia. In the morning, it feels bright, easy, and café-like; by night, the bar, neon, pool table, and deeper corners give it more of a clubhouse feeling. It’s playful without being themed, polished without feeling overly designed, and familiar without turning into a pastiche.

The result is a room that feels social from the moment you walk in. It feels like a diner, a bar, a sandwich shop, and someone’s rec room all folded together — a little nostalgic, a little weird, and very much its own thing.
